The NFL announced today that New York Giants safety Will Hill has been suspended four games for a violation of the league’s substance abuse policy. This is the second four game suspension for Hill who was given a similar suspension in the 2012 season for violating the league’s rules against performance enhancing drugs.
There has not been any indication as to what exactly Hill has tested positive for, but it can be safely assumed that this positive was not for something listed on the performance enhancing drugs list, as a second PED violation would have been an eight game suspension as opposed to the four game suspension he has received. Hill stated last year that the PED suspension was caused by the use of Adderall.
Hill’s four-game suspension will cost him $112,941 in base salary.
Hill played his college ball at the University of Florida. Positive drug tests for marijuana kept Hill from being drafted in the 2011 draft. After spending a year in the Arena Football League, Hill was signed to a three-year contract by the Giants prior to the 2012 season.
The Giants were counting on Hill to move into a bigger role this season after the departure of Kenny Phillips as a free agent. Phillips signed with the Philadelphia Eagles this off-season. Hill played in just over 20% of the Giants defensive snaps last season, while playing a big role on the Giants special teams units.
Hill, 23-years-old, played in 12 games for the Giants last season. Hill had 27 tackles, including two for a loss, with two passes defensed on defense with 11 tackles, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery on special teams.
