Report: Jacoby Jones out 4-6 Weeks With an MCL Sprain

Mike Florio of Profootballtalk is reporting that Jacoby Jones injury is less serious than originally feared, stating that the Baltimore Ravens wide receiver and return man merely suffered an MCL Sprain in the Ravens opening night loss to the Denver Broncos.  While it could have been a lot worse for Baltimore, the injury will still keep Jones out of the lineup for 4-6 weeks further depleting a group of receivers that lost Anquan Boldin to trade, and tight end Dennis Pitta to injury since winning last year’s Superbowl.

Jones is a huge part of the Ravens offense as the number two receiver opposite Torrey Smith.  The injury will leave the Ravens with just five healthy wide receivers on their 53 man roster.  It will be interesting to see if the Ravens decide to explore the list of players recently cut by other NFL teams in trying to fill that gap in the short term.

The injury occurred while Jones was attempting to field a punt in the second quarter of last night’s game.  Teammate Brynden Trawick accidentally collided with Jones, and his knee bent in a way that knees aren’t supposed to bend.  The replays certainly looked worse than the reported diagnosis, as Jones and the Ravens are probably breathing a sigh of relief on hearing the news.

Jones had three receptions in the game, for 24 yards before being injured.

Last season Jones had 30 catches for 406 yards and a touchdown.  He added two kickoff return touchdowns, and one punt returner touchdown in the regular season as well.  In the Superbowl, Jones 2nd quarter 56-yard reception for a TD, as well as his kick return touchdown at the start of the second half were key plays in helping the Ravens to the title.
