A Spy Amongst the Bayern Bunch

Last weekend Bayern Munich travelled to, and beat their Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund 3-0 and continued their successful season under new coach Pep Guardiola. The match could not have gone any better for Bayern when who else but Mario Gotze scored against his old club and got Bayern on the score sheet first.

However, the weekend would not end happy for the German giants as the club has found out that a spy within the camp has been leaking inside information. Before their big matchup against Dortmund, someone from the Bayern organization, supposedly a player, leaked Guardiola’s tactical instructions and lineups to the newspaper Bild.

Guardiola has vowed to axe the perpetrator saying “It does not matter who it is, heads will roll,” to his players after their win. “I will throw him out. He will not play under me again.”

Bayern’s Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge stated that the club will investigate the situation. “We won’t be turning to the NSA [the US National Security Agency] to find out who it is, but I would advise the person concerned to immediately stop this performance,” Rummenigge said.

This is not the first time this kind of controversy has happened in European soccer. In the 2012 European Championship the German national soccer team lineup for the quarter-final match against Greece was leaked, also to Bild. In the same year, four players of Preston North End, told Sheffield Wednesday tactical and lineup information on the eve of the game between the two teams.

With Bayern set to play CSKA Moscow on Wednesday, the investigation comes as a distraction, but one that I believe Bayern will be able to overcome. The team’s success continues to flourish under Guardiola. Bayern sit on top of the Bundesliga table with 35 points and they are already through to the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League.

As if Bayern needed any more problems, Mario Mandzukic has suffered a calf problem and will not play against CSKA Moscow. Bayern Munich has so much confidence that getting past this situation will not be a problem. But it still makes me wonder, which player would trade inside information against their own club?
