The Houston Texans started the season at 2-0 and following up on a successful 2012 season looked to be a possibility for the team. However, disaster struck, and the team lost their next 13 games in row, leading to the dismissal of head coach Gary Kubiak. Now the Texans, appear to found the man who will try to turn the franchise around, and its someone who has experience jumping into a bad situation.
According to a report from ESPN’s Chris Mortensen and Adam Shefter the Texans are working on a deal to entice Penn State Nittany Lions head coach Bill O’Brien into jumping to the NFL and become the franchise’s next head coach.
O’Brien took over the Nittany Lions two years ago in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal and following the dismissal of Joe Paterno, and the imposition of NCAA sanctions on the school. Despite those trying conditions, O’Brien has led the Nittany Lions to an 8-4 record in 2012 and a 7-5 record in 2013. PSU has been banned from post-season play in each of these years due to the aforementioned sanctions.
O’Brien also has NFL experience as he was an assistant with the New England Patriots from 2007 to 2012. Reports indicate that Belichick was highly respected in that role and has received top recommendations from people such as Bill Belichick and Robert Kraft.
Penn State lowered the buyout conditions in O’Brien’s contract from $19.33 million to $6.48 million according to the ESPN report. This was done in order to ensure that O’Brien would return to the school following the 2012 season.
The Texans have reportedly met with O’Brien in his Cape Cod home.
Penn State is apparently preparing for his departure as they have reportedly contacted Greg Schiano and Mike Munchiak in exploratory talks to be the next head coach of the Nittany Lions.
