One of Big Blue’s rising stars might be at a crossroads in his career. And it comes at a particularly awkward time if the Giants were hoping for a quick fix for everything that went wrong in 2013.
In what is an off-season of drastic changes for the New York Giants, there is one situation that the Giants were hoping to avoid. Of course, nothing came easy for the Big Blue this year, so it probably should come as no surprise that David Wilson’s neck issue will force GM Jerry Reese into looking into contingency plans for a position that they were hoping they could stave off until after taking care of the offensive line.
With the retirement of Brandon Jacobs and the impending free-agency of Andre Brown (whom the Giants like, but he carries a significant injury risk), only Michael Cox remains on the active roster heading into organized team activities and the draft.
Fortunately, Wilson’s decision to go under the knife, and what it could potentially mean for Wilson’s career appears to be of little surprise to Jerry Reese.
“Well, it’s hard to say that,” Reese said. “If a guy has a possible surgery that could end his career, it’s hard to say that. We’ll have to have some contingency plans at the running back position. I don’t think you go into next season saying David Wilson is going to be our starting running back. I don’t think you can do that with a guy coming off a neck surgery. If he decides to have one.”
The Giants hope that Wilson will be ready before the season starts, but if this is spinal stenosis like it’s been previously assumed and feared, well, the Giants don’t have to go far to get a first-hand account as for how long the recuperation time may take. Big Brother Manning spent his final season as a Colt on the sideline after going through a similar procedure, albeit four times in one off-season.
Simply put, Jerry Reese’s job has gotten even more difficult than it was when the last game of the season ended and the only real spot of worry was the offensive line. Now, with a new offensive coordinator coming and only one running back to work with currently on the roster, what was a tough turnover has now become a full-fledged overhaul unless Wilson makes a seemingly miraculous recovery.
