The Montreal Canadiens have announced that defenceman Josh Gorges will be out for four weeks after hand surgery.
Below is the official team press release.
“MONTREAL – The Montreal Canadiens issued Monday a medical update on defenseman Josh Gorges.
Gorges underwent surgery this morning to repair a fracture in his left hand.
His recovery is estimated to be four weeks.
The surgery was performed in Montreal by Dr. Paul Martineau.”
Gorges was recently sent home after just two games in the Habs recent four game road trip. However it has been said that he originally injured his hand blocking a shot in either the game against the Toronto Maple Leafs or the game against the Pittsburgh Penguins prior to the road trip. Gorges played through the fracture in at least two, and maybe three games last week.
The Canadiens acquired Florida Panthers defenceman Mike Weaver on Tuesday, and considering that he plays a similar style to Gorges and will be able to take over some of the big minutes that Gorges plays on the Canadiens penalty kill, this additional depth looks to have been an important trade deadline move by general manager Marc Bergevin.
The Canadiens await word on the status of goaltender Carey Price who is out with a lower body injury. The team’s next game is Wednesday at home against the Boston Bruins.
Gorges has one goal and 12 assists for 13 points this season and is a +7. He often plays on the Canadiens top pair with P.K. Subban. Rookie Jarred Tinordi has taken his spot beside Subban in the last two games.
