WWE announced the release of Alberto Del Rio due to unprofessional conduct and an altercation with an employee.

Del Rio, real name Alberto Rodriguez, first joined the WWE back in 2010 after a successful career in Mexico under a mask. Working as the son of Dos Caras, he entered the WWE and had his mask removed. Frustrated with the lack of movement while he was in their development system, the WWE soon agreed to bring him up as Mexican aristocrat Alberto Del Rio, complete with his own servant named Ricardo Rodriguez. Del Rio made a major impact on Smackdown immediately and rose up the WWE ranks. Del Rio soon took out Rey Mysterio Jr. with an injury to his arm and then defeated Matt Hardy in his last appearance in the WWE.

On January 30, 2011, Alberto Del Rio won the WWE Royal Rumble for the right to challenge a world champion at Wrestlemania XXVII. Not even a year into the company, Del Rio was already being established as one of the top heels in the company. However, Del Rio’s match with World Heavyweight champion Edge ended in defeat. Del Rio was never able to avenge his loss as Edge soon retired from the WWE.

Just after a year in the company, Del Rio then won the WWE Money in the Bank and cashed it in at Summerslam to defeat CM Punk and become the WWE champion. Del Rio held onto the title until Survivor Series, losing it back to CM Punk. Del Rio spent the rest of 2012 receiving countless title shots for the World Heavyweight championship on Smackdown, only to come out on the losing end. Del Rio soon turned babyface at TLC in December and kicked off 2013 by defeating The Big Show and becoming World Heavyweight champion. Del Rio lost the title to Dolph Ziggler, who cashed in the Money in the Bank contract on him. Del Rio turned heel several months later and regained the World Heavyweight championship against Ziggler, exposing Ziggler’s injury. This reign ended at Hell in a Cell against John Cena.

Since then, Alberto Del Rio had been lost in the shuffle in WWE. Adam Contant of Sports Events Guide discussed what the company should do with him since his miring in the midcard. WWE released Del Rio today, claiming an altercation with an employee and unprofessional conduct. We will update when more details are available. There was speculation earlier this week that major names could be released by the WWE due to the recent financial problems after the stumbled launch of the WWE Network. While the reasoning for Del Rio’s release says an altercation and that’s likely to have happened, one could speculate the WWE was quick to release instead of merely reprimand in order to get out of a major talent contract.
