Marco Wittmann Set for DTM Title

With just 3 races left in the DTM season and 64 points between BMW Team RMG’s Marco Wittmann and Audi Sport Abt Sportsline’s Mattias Ekstrom, it looks as if the German will clinch the 2014 DTM drivers’ title. Team RMG are close to clinching the constructors title for BMW, 67 points ahead of the Audi Sport Abt team.

Wittmann has won the most races of anyone with 4 wins to his name and points in every race bar one. Only in his second year of the DTM, he has shown maturity and speed and has impressed many. Nearest rival and two-time DTM champion Swedish Ekstrom hasn’t yet won a single race this season, but has had a string of podiums, boosting him to second place and locking BMW and Audi into a tight fight. It’s unlikely Ekstrom will be able to overcome Wittmann, but a spat of unreliability may just enable him to get close.  Albeit Wittmann not scoring at all for the rest of the season and Ekstrom winning every race might be a bit far fetched, stranger things have happened in motorsport! With only three rounds to go, don’t be surprised if Wittmann was feeling confident.

Reigning champion Audi Sport Phoenix driver Mike Rockenfeller lies 4th and is 67 points behind Wittmann.

Mercedes, after what looked like a turning point, have continued to underwhelm this season. Christian Vietoris is the highest placed driver in 6th position, with Paul di Resta next up a little further down the order due to a string of unreliability. The HWA and Mucke Motorsport teams are still way down in the manufacturers with a 163-point gap to second placed Audi and 181 to leaders BMW.

The next race takes place at the Lausitzring on the 14th of September.
