The quarter final stages of the Capital One Cup came to an end, with Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, and Sheffield United qualifying for the semi-final stage.
The quarter-finals of the League Cup, or Capital One Cup, were completed yesterday and today, with four fixtures being played. In three of the four games, we saw the expected result. The day would not be without intrigue though, as there was one surprise amongst the four semi-finalists.
Sheffield United put in a gutsy effort to manufacture the greatest upset of the round when they defeated Premier League high-flyers Southampton. In the 1-0 win, Southampton looked toothless.
Liverpool were successful in their quarter-final tie against AFC Bournemouth, winning 3-1 with some ease. With new signing Lazar Markovic netting his first goal and Raheem Sterling bagging a brace, the Merseysiders did not lack vigour and accuracy in their attacking play.
Chelsea were victors against Championship side Derby County 3-1 in a game of typical control by Jose Mourinho’s side.
Spurs defeated Newcastle United comprehensively in a 4-0 win, setting up a semi-final tie against Sheffield United at White Hart Lane, leaving Liverpool to take on Chelsea in the other semi-final tie at Anfield.
