Athleticism: C-
Average athlete, who has decent foot speed for a player of his size. Doesn’t have breakaway speed, but has some burst when he gets going but is a one speed runner. Lacks speed to turn the corner, but is fairly agile.
Inside Run: B-
Quick to hit the hole and has good vision to find what little holes he was able to get with the Gophers. Can get skinny to fit through holes and avoid direct contact. Runs with low pads and good forward lean. Runs his feet on contact and rarely gets knocked backward. Is almost always falling forward and can grind out yards after contact, even though he doesn’t break as many tackles as would be expected. Wins with effort and technique rather than exceptional power and strength.
Outside Run: D+
Rarely bounces the play outside, but when he does he gets good results thanks to his vision. Lacks speed and burst, but uses good footwork and flexibility to elude would-be tacklers. Likely won’t have much success in this area in the NFL.
Blocking: C
Has the frame, lacks the ability. Is more interested in the passing game than blocking and it shows. Will do the bare minimum to chip block so that he can get into his route quicker. Lacks a great anchor and will get walked backward when he does stay in to block.
Receiving: C
Hands are adequate and will make the catch more often than not, but will have the occasional drop. Vision and production after the catch are exceptional. Routinely picks up the first down on check downs.
Red Flags: None
Bottom Line: David Cobb is a tough inside runner, who powered his way to two consecutive great seasons. Cobb’s ceiling may be as a complementary back, given that he has a glaring weakness with ball security. He would fit best on a team that emphasized the downhill running game, and where he won’t be counted on as a blocker.
Comparison: Toby Gerhart
Grade: 7.6 (5th Round)
