Athleticism: D+

Unathletic, even for a guard and lacks the tools for a zone blocking scheme. Has the range to execute short pulls, but is limited by how far he can move in a given amount of time. Carries a lot of weight in his torso and mid-section, and lumbers when he gets outside of a phone booth.

Pass Blocking: C-

Athleticism is a glaring weakness here, and lacks lateral movement skills to adjust to stunts and delayed blitzes. Plays too high and can get knocked backward when he gets lazy with his technique, despite an above average anchor.

Run Blocking: B

Is a highly specialized blocker in this area, as he is restricted to a short amount of real estate within which he is effective. At his best when asked to turn defensive tackles out of the hole. Very strong in the upper body and can latch on and steer. Does not get an ideal amount of push up front when drive blocking and is below average when working outside or to the second level. Can blow up linebackers and safeties but has trouble getting to them.

Technique: C-

Possesses strong hands, but can get frenetic with his hand placement and negate his ability to lock out and control. Has good footwork considering his athleticism, but would like to see him run his feet more on contact. Plays too high, and takes away from his natural size and power advantage.

Intangibles: C

Weight and stamina appear to be issues, as he is not able to play outside of a phone booth and jogs at best towards the play. Would be best served shedding bad weight and adding more muscle. Has good awareness on the field and appears to pick up delayed blitzes by sight, and is a very aware help blocker in pass protection. Rotated between left and right guard as a senior under Bobby Petrino and has some versatility.

Red Flags: None

Bottom Line: John Miller is not the kind of player that every team will be after and likely won’t be on draft boards of teams that zone block up front. However, Miller offers value to teams that emphasize a power running game, especially if he takes to coaching. Might be best served as a backup, but could start if called upon without disaster.

Comparison: Eric Herman

Grade: 7.4 (5th Round)
