Sports. Honestly. Since 2011

Dear Sports Fans

Dear sports fans,

I can’t believe that I have to write this, but here it is: stop doing stupid things. I feel like every week I read a new article about how fans called out a player on social media for making one bad play, or got into fights with other fans at a stadium because the latter group just so happened to root for a different team than them. Also, what is the deal with fans getting a tattoo of their team winning a championship before they have even won it? Why would you do this? Someone, please tell me: why you would do this?  Maybe it is just social media making all of these things more visible nowadays, but regardless, we need to put a stop to this.

A kicker misses one kick. Deal with it.  He made one mistake, just one, and you want to blame him? Do you feel tough, calling him out and trashing him and his family across social media?  He feels bad enough as it is for making the mistake, and you harp on him, over and over again, for this single mistake. How would you feel if he put you and your family on blast on social media for a mistake you made at work? It’s human error, and it happens. One of the things that makes sports so great is the fact that a plan can take an unexpected turn due to human error.

Don’t fight people just because they root for a different team than you do.  It is a game, and they simply decided to root for a different team than you did; it’s not that big of a deal, in the grand scheme of things. As a Kansas City Chiefs fan, I have plenty of friends who root for the Broncos.  I love to joke around with them and trash their team right in front of them, and I know that they love to do the same back to me, but I would never fight them because they root for the Broncos. That would be ridiculous. It seems that I can’t go a week without reading about how some fans got into a fight with fans of a rival team. I just think that this whole matter is crazy. All in all, it is not that big of a deal, and if you are not the type of fan who can handle a win or loss very well, then maybe you should stop attending sporting events.

With regards to fans getting a championship tattoo before their team actually wins the championship, I don’t even know what to say. I mean, seriously, this is almost guaranteed to be a jinx, when it comes to sports.  I have never been confident enough that my team is going to win a game, let alone a championship, to say that I will get a tattoo because they will win the title this year. Are you just doing this for the publicity, because your picture will be all over social media as the idiot who got a tattoo too soon?  You do know that tattoos are permanent, right?
