The Calgary Flames have announced that goaltender Karri Ramo has suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus damage in his left knee, which will keep him out for the remainder of the season. The goaltending duties will now fall to Jonas Hiller and rookie Joni Ortio.

Ramo was injured near the end of the 3rd period in the Flames-San Jose Sharks game, when Sharks Joonas Donskoi was rushing to the net with the puck, lost his balance, and crashed into the crease. Ramo’s knee was caught between Donskoi and the post while making the save. He immediately grabbed his knee and was unable to get up on his own.
The 29 year old Finnish goalie, who was a 6th round pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, was in the midst of his 3rd professional season in the NHL, all with the Flames. He, along with Hiller, inherited the crease from Miika Kiprusoff, another Finland native, who retired after the 2012-13 season.
Ramo had played in 37 games this season and had a record of 17-18, a GAA of 2.63, and a SV% of .909 for the struggling Flames, who are currently sitting 13th in the Western Conference. Hiller, who has a record of 8-7, 3.27 GAA, and a SV% of .886, will now take the starting role while Ortio will be the back up for the remaining 26 games, unless Flames GM Brad Treviling decides to trade for a goalie before the Trade Deadline on February 29th.
Ramo is scheduled to be an UFA this summer, as his one year $3.8 million dollar contract will expire.
