Germain Ifedi 2016 NFL Draft Profile

For three consecutive years, Texas A&M has produced a first round pick at the tackle position. With his upside and versatility, Germain Ifedi could add to that budding tradition.

A three-sport athlete at Houston Westside High School, playing basketball and running track in addition to football, Ifedi came to College Station a four-star recruit, ranking in the top 20 of guards nationally by recruiting sites Scout.com and 247sports.com. He would begin his redshirt freshman season in 2013 blocking for Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel while earning  Sporting News Fresham All-American Honors for himself. During his first two years as a starter, the Aggies would boast one of the most high powered offenses in the nation.

After earning All-SEC honors after the 2015 season, Ifedi elected to forego his senior year and declare for the 2016 NFL Draft.

Strengths

  • Strong hands and arms.
  • Ideal size and length.
  • Good lateral movement to cut off speed rushers.
  • Versatile, able to play at guard and tackle on either side of the line.
  • 37 starts at either guard or tackle gives him experience from all positions on the line.

Weaknesses

  • Needs to use legs when blocking to gain more leverage.
  • Needs to improve mechanics: footwork, hand placement.
  • Appears to lose focus at times leading to false starts
  • Slow hands allow rushers to get to close, hampering his block timing.

NFL Comparison: Billy Turner, Miami Dolphins

Teams with need: Tennessee Titans, Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans,Baltimore Ravens, Miami Dolphins, New York Jets, Oakland Raiders,Denver Broncos, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, Seattle Seahawks, Atlanta Falcons, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Carolina Panthers

Projection: First round – early second.

Bottom Line

Ifedi’s 24 starts entering his junior year made him a veteran on the Aggies offensive line as he would make the move to left tackle. However, Ifedi, as well as the Aggies as a team struggled and Ifedi would be moved back to right tackle for the remainder of the season. With so many teams having a need at either tackle or guard, Ifedi’s chances of going first round are high. That said, he needs dedicated coaching in order to unleash his full potential.
