Very, very quietly the NFL has made some significant changes in their front office. Merton Hanks, NFL Vice President of Football Operations and Policy Compliance, is no longer part of the league office. According to Pro Football Talk, the change appears to be initiated by the league itself as they attempt to improve results in that area. However, no specific reason for his exit has been provided as of yet especially concerning whether Hanks departure was voluntary or not.
Merton Hanks No Longer Part of NFL League Office
Hanks was a four-time Pro Bowl defensive back with the San Francisco 49ers. He was also named to the 1995 All-Pro team. While serving as the V.P. of Football Operations he has been responsible for deciding the initial punishments regarding on-field discipline. With the numerous botched decisions regarding punishments of players such as Ray Rice and Greg Hardy, the department has been under heavy scrutiny likely leading to an off-season change. The lack of consistency with the punishments levied by Hanks has brought much criticism upon the league and Commissioner Roger Goodell. It seems that the NFL is taking the time to clean out the Operations Department.
Two others were relieved of their duties within the NFL Operations Department. Joe Hurta and Russ Giglio were also let go. It remains to be seen who will be appointed to fill the now vacant positions.
The NFL has yet to respond to any comments or questions that have been extended to them.
