Braxton Garrett 2016 MLB Draft Profile
Braxton Garrett is an 18-year-old high school pitcher at Florence High School. He is currently committed to the university of Vanderbilt. He has been scouted heavily, and pitched for team USA at various showcases, as well as for the East Cobb Astros. At 6’3″ and 190 lbs., he has the classic pitcher’s build, which should do him good as he transitions to college and, eventuallyl the pros.
He possesses a fastball in the low nineties, but as he matures there is no reason why he cannot increase that velocity into the mid-nineties by the time he finally sees a major league diamond. What really catches the eyes of scouts is his curveball; it is easily one of the best curveballs in this year’s draft and looks like it is already major league ready.
Strengths
- One of the best curveballs in this years draft
- Good control
- Good fastball and change-up
Weaknesses
- Always a risk with drafting a player strait out of high school
MLB Comparison: C.J Wilson
Projected Pick Range: Top 15
Most Likely Landing Spots: Tampa Bay, Oakland, and Seattle
Bottom Line
Braxton Garrett is a can’t-miss prospect strait out of high school. He is for sure worth an early first round pick. But, due to his age, he will need to spend time in the minors developing. For that reason, look for a team that is not in desperate need of immediate pitching help, such as the teams listed above to draft him. This young pitcher has a very good arsenal of pitches and, with enough drive, could be a very good major league pitcher down the road.
