On Thursday, the Jacksonville Jaguars announced that they have come to terms with one of their star wide receivers, Allen Hurns, on a four-year contract extension.
According to NFL Media Insider, Ian Rapoport, the deal is worth $40 million and it also includes $20 million in guarantees, along with escalators that could push this deal up to $11 million per season, according to a person who was directly involved with the deal. Hurns is now under contract with the Jaguars until 2020.
The former Miami Hurricanes wide receiver had a breakout season in 2015, in which he recorded 64 receptions for 1,031 yards and ten touchdowns, all of which were career-highs for the Jags rising star. He also became the youngest undrafted player in the history of the NFL to reach and eclipse the 1,000 yard receiving mark, along with ten touchdowns. That’s not the only record Hurns accomplished, he now ranks second in Jaguars history with yards per reception (14.9).
“We are excited for Allen and his family and this is very well deserved,” Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell said in a statement on the team website. “He is an extremely hardworking player and is so dedicated to his craft. Since the day he arrived, he’s been a consummate professional and is a great representative of the Jaguars in the community. He continues to impress our coaching staff on a daily basis and has certainly earned the respect of his teammates. Our organization philosophy is to reward our homegrown players when the opportunity presents itself. Hurns is a clear example of that.”
Hurns will be entering his third season in the NFL, and he’s part of the league’s most explosive young wide receivers duos, that include a 6-foot-3, 215 pound Allen Robinson.
Robinson, who played his college ball at Penn State, before being drafted by the Jaguars in the second-round of the 2014 NFL Draft, will certainly earn his own contract extension during the next off-season. The only reason Hurns received a contract extension before Robinson was due to the fact Hurns went undrafted out of college and thus had a shorter rookie deal.
Both Hurns and Robinson, along with tight end Julius Thomas, provide the Jaguars young quarterback, Blake Bortles, with three of the league’s most explosive and productive players at their respective positions.
