A 14th consecutive sell-out crowd on Canada Day came to watch the Hamilton Tiger-Cats lose. The team performed terribly last night, losing to the B.C. Lions 28-3. Hamilton got off to a great opening drive, but unfortunately couldn’t maintain that success consistently. Hamilton drops to 1-1, while the Lions improve to 2-0.

Offense
Jeremiah Masoli played inconsistently for most of the game. Despite a 67% completion rating on 26 of 39 for 248 passing yards, he was unable to throw the deep ball effectively. Furthermore, he threw two avoidable interceptions, and couldn’t drive the offense down the field most of the game.
C.J. Gable had an admirable outing on the ground with only seven carries and 48 yards rushing. The main receiving corps of Chad Owens, Andy Fantuz, Luke Tasker and Tiquan Underwood put respectable numbers on offence. Tasker led the attack with seven catches for 70 yards, but due to the ineffective production all game long, it wasn’t good enough. The offensive line had a terrible performance throughout the contest. Pass protection collapsed many times and provided Masoli limited time to make the quality throws that he did well in Toronto last week.
Defence/Special Teams
Despite the circumstances, the Tiger-Cats defence still played well. Simoni Lawrence played another great game with seven tackles, and Larry Dean had eight tackles to lead the team. The defence kept the B.C. Lions offence in check for majority of the game, but couldn’t stay disciplined.
Furthermore, the defense committed the majority of the team penalties, especially Geoff Tisdale. Tisdale’s ability to cover top playmakers should be in question come practice early next week. In addition, the unit was kept in check by the great showing by the Lions offensive line. If the defense adjust its discipline, and plays fewer drop backs, things should improve.
Brett Maher couldn’t muster field goals with the blazing wind, although he provided a couple of great long punts. The Lions special teams crew kept Brandon Banks in check all game long.
Coaching
Wally Buono clearly showed why he has now 397 career wins as a head coach last night. He clearly outwitted Ticats head coach Kent Austin with critical discipline and playmaking ability. After the opening drive, Buono’s adjustments clearly held the Ticats in check, and they never seriously threatened the Lions’ lead.
