Atlanta Braves Trade Hunter Cervenka for Prospects

The Atlanta Braves have traded left-handed reliever Hunter Cervenka to the Miami Marlins for two prospects. The two prospects coming to the Braves are infielder Anfernee Seymour and left-handed pitcher Michael Mader. The pair of prospects were ranked eleventh and twenty-fourth on the Marlins.

Atlanta Braves Trade Hunter Cervenka for Prospects

Hunter Cervenka

Hunter Cervenka’s path to the majors has been a wild one. Cervenka was originally drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the twenty-seventh round of the 2008 draft. He was traded from the Red Sox to the Chicago Cubs in 2012. Unfortunately, he never made it past Triple-A and was released by the Cubs in 2015.

Cervenka was pitching in Independent ball for the Sugar Land Skeeters when he signed with the Braves. Cervenka made his debut on April 7th versus the Washington Nationals. He allowed a hit to the lone batter he faced in his debut. Needless to say, Cervenka has dazzled since his rather unimpressive debut. He did not allow a run in his first fifteen appearances out of the bullpen. The fifteen straight scoreless appearances to begin his career are a Braves franchise record.

Cervenka has logged fifty appearances for the season. He earned his first win on Thursday, August 4th with a perfect 0.2 innings pitched against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Cervenka has a 3.18 ERA on the season with thirty-five strikeouts in thirty-four innings pitched. Walks have been an issue with twenty-three on the year, but Cervenka should bring consistency and reliability to the Marlins’ bullpen.

Anfernee Seymour

Anfernee Seymour was drafted by the Marlins in the seventh round of the 2014 draft. Seymour has spent all of 2016 with the Greensboro Grasshoppers at Single-A ball. Seymour has posted a triple slash line of .252/.293/.306 in 103 games for the Grasshoppers. He has added one home run and twenty-six runs batted in. The biggest upside for Seymour is his speed which has produced thirty-six steals this season.

Michael Mader

Michael Mader was drafted by the Marlins in the third round of the 2014 draft. Mader spent two years at Chipola College in Marianna, Florida before being drafted. Mader has spent the 2016 season with the Jupiter Hammerheads, the Marlins’ Advanced-A ball club. Mader has posted a solid year. He is 7-6 in twenty-two games, twenty-one of which were starts. He has an ERA of 3.50 in 103.0 innings pitched. Mader has just eighty-one strikeouts for the season, but he has yielded just five home runs on the season. Mader joins a loaded Braves farm system that already has seven left-handed pitchers among its top thirty prospects.
