Game 0f the Week: Hamilton Tiger-Cats vs. B.C. Lions

The last game of the week certainly provided the biggest bang as the CFL wrapped up Week 8 with a showdown between the B.C. Lions and the Hamilton Tiger-CatsZach Collaros made his much anticipated return to the starting line-up and the B.C. Lions were hungry to keep pace with the Calgary Stampeders for first in the West.

The game started off ominously with Collaros shaking off nearly a year of rust and getting pummelled early by the Lions defence. Across the field Jonathon Jennings continued his stellar play, leading the red-hot Lions offence to 32 points by half time. The game seemed to be wrapped up and tucked away with half the game still to go, except it wasn’t.

Collaros and favourite receiver Luke Tasker roared out of the half to make a thrilling comeback attempt as the Tabbies threw 26 points out on a suddenly stumbling Lions team that couldn’t have been more shocked at the turn around. However, like the elite team they are, the Lions bent but didn’t break against the onslaught and snatched victory away from the surging Tiger-Cats with a touchdown to Emmanuel Arceneaux in the last 2 minutes of the game. It was a thriller to be remembered.

Player of the Week: Kevin Fogg

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers beat the Toronto Argonauts, 34-17 last Friday night. A big part of the Bombers win was the outstanding play of defensive back, Kevin Fogg.  With their victory on Friday night, Bombers now have won three games in a row.

Fogg was a monster in the Bombers secondary causing havoc for Argonauts receivers and quarterback, Logan Kilgore.  He put on the best defence performance of the CFL so far.  He recorded a sack, two interceptions and fumble recovery in the win.  Fogg’s first interception came in the second quarter after the Bombers were down, 10-3.  Fogg’s interception gave the Bombers some momentum to dominate the quarter and take a 13-10 lead into half-time.

Fogg also got his sack in the quarter. Fogg, on the Argos first two drives of the third quarter, showed the Argos offence who was boss. On third play of the first Argos possession of the quarter, he recovered a Kenny Shaw fumble. On the Argos second play of their second drive, Fogg picked off Kilgore for his second interception of the game. Fogg’s second interception was the turning point in the game as it led to a four-yard touchdown run by Andrew Harris, which put the Bombers ahead 20-10.   Bombers scored 10 out of their 34 points following Fogg’s turnovers.

The Bombers are on bye this week and will look to continue their winning streak against the Montreal Alouettes on August 26th.

Honourable mention:  Emmanuel Arceneaux.  Arcenaux caught two touchdowns for 105 yards in the Lions win over the Tiger-Cats on Saturday night. It was the Manny show at B.C. Place Stadium.

Unnecessary Participation: Chris Jones’ Expanded Roster

It’s been a drama-filled and very expensive week for Chris Jones and the Saskatchewan  Roughriders. After Bo Levi Mitchell tweets, Riders fan backlash and a league investigation, the Riders were guilty of a plethora of roster violations. The organization was subsequently fined $60,000 and $26,000 deductions from their salary cap. This of course comes after a ratio violation during the previous week’s game against the B.C. Lions.

Jones and Roughriders CEO Craig Reynolds made all the appropriate apologies and respecting of the league’s decisions. Did this stop the drama? Not really. Jones took to the podium once more and implored the league to expand their investigations to all nine teams.

The Stamps entered Mosaic Stadium for the last time against loud and angry Riders fans and end up winning the game. Did Jones take the loss with great sportsmanship? Again, not really. After some fancy lip-reading, reports flooded with stories that after the game, Jones said to Dave Dickenson, “Win with some class”. This left Dickenson and many scratching their heads. No one knows what Jones meant by that, but with this and all the fines, Jones earns our unnecessary participation this week.
