The 2016 college football season is quickly approaching. With less than two weeks until kickoff, fans and players all around the country are gearing up for another season of the enthralling sport every football fan loves. For LSU, expectations are high this year down in Death Valley. The Tigers have arguably the best running back in the country in Leonard Fournette. He is looking to get back on track where he left off last season as one of the best overall players in college football. With Fournette at the helm of the offense, the Tigers can have a memorable 2016 season.
Three Ways the Tigers Can Have a Remarkable Season:
LSU wins the SEC
The Tigers haven’t won the SEC, let alone the SEC West, since 2011. Here we are five years later, and LSU is still looking for another conference championship. Several things can make or break LSU this season, including the play of quarterback Brandon Harris. If Harris can show his true ability to lead this team as the number one quarterback, everything else should be set in stone for the Tigers to make a run at the conference championship. Not only does the offense have to be on track, but the defense does as well. The Tigers are led by sophomore Arden Key on defense, who will be better than he was last year. With the secondary, look for Kevin Toliver to make plays through the air and get the offense back onto the field without the opponent racking up many points.
Leonard Fournette wins the Heisman Trophy
LSU appears to have a great backfield year in and year out. For the last two seasons, Fournette has been showing us his potential and it gets better every game. Last season, he was the Heisman front-runner up until the Alabama game. Once that game ended and the next three games were played, Fournette was merely out of the picture for the Heisman. Recall that the star running back only accounted for 31 rushing yards against Alabama, which resulted in a 30-16 win for the Tide. The key for him this season is to stay healthy and gain big amounts of yardage, especially with his ability to shred through opposing defense. Between Fournette, DeShaun Watson of Clemson, and Christian McCaffrey of Stanford, this year’s Heisman race will be thrilling to watch. As long as he keeps his composure and racks up the yards and touchdowns, he could be the first player to win a Heisman trophy at LSU since the one and only Billy Cannon in 1958.
The Tigers win a National Championship
LSU is not only on the prowl for an SEC Championship, they are also lurking for a National Championship. Recall the 2012 BCS National Championship in New Orleans against Alabama. LSU hasn’t had more than a 10-win season since 2011, which is something rarely heard of. The Tigers mostly win ten games per season on a consistent basis. They need to get things clicking in the first game against Wisconsin at Lambeau Field in Green Bay. If the Tigers can showcase how good this team is within the first few weeks of the season, fans may be able to go ahead and say “This team is going to win a National Championship”. Now, winning the valuable college football playoff trophy is something that may make or break Les Miles as the head coach at LSU for this season. Miles was nearly fired last year after the slump started with the loss to Alabama. But if the Tigers lose a few games and don’t wind up winning at all, the team should still retain him for a few more years. Plus, seeing Fournette hold the national championship trophy in potentially his final season at LSU would be memorable for any Tiger fan.
