According to reports, recently released cornerback Antonio Cromartie would be willing to take less to play for the Jets. Whether the Jets would be interested remains to be seen. Cromartie would likely be fine taking a cheaper deal “because he loves the Jets organization and coach Todd Bowles.”
The New York Jets released Cromartie on Monday in a cost cutting move that should open up around $8 million in cap space for the team. This is likely in preparation for their attempt to retain the services of impending free agents such as Mohammad Wilkerson, Damon Williams, Chris Ivory and Ryan Fitzpatrick. Cromartie, now 31 years old, is coming off one of his worst seasons as a pro (10 seasons), finishing the season without a single interception. The Jets fielded a defense that ranked fourth in total defense this past season, yet gave up more passes of over 20 yards than 28 other teams in the league. Cromartie was often a victim in the passing game playing opposite of Darrelle Revis most of the season, which could lead to the Jets looking for a younger upgrade rather than bring the veteran corner back.
Despite his reputation as a cover corner in the past, age and injuries appear to have slowed down Cromartie he will draw interest on the free agent market. It will likely just be a far lower number than the four-year, $32 million deal he signed with the Jets previously. Whether with the Jets or another team, expect to see Cromartie on the field somewhere this season.
