The Baltimore Orioles added depth to their starting rotation on Sunday with the acquisition of left-hander Wade Miley from the Seattle Mariners.

Baltimore Orioles Acquire Wade Miley
Miley owns a 7-8 record on the season with a 4.98 ERA, with a WHIP of 1.34. He was originally drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first round of the 2008 MLB Draft (43rd overall). Except for the 2012 season, in which he was a National League All-Star and finished second in the NL Rookie of the Year voting, Miley has performed inconsistently throughout his career. He has thrown over 200 innings twice (2013, 2014), but has also only had an ERA under four twice (2012, 2013).
The 29-year-old spent 2015 with the Boston Red Sox after signing a three-year contract for $19.25 million, and finished with an 11-11 record and 4.46 ERA. In December of that year, he was traded to the Mariners for a package that included reliever Carson Smith.
“Wade Miley is a workhorse veteran left-handed starter who likes to pitch and compete,” Dan Duquette, the Orioles’ Executive VP of Baseball Operations, told the Associated Press. “We think he will contribute to this year’s club with some quality innings.”
In return, the Orioles sent minor league left-handed pitcher Ariel Miranda in the one-for-one deal. The 27-year-old prospect from Cuba is 4-7 with a 3.93 ERA for the Triple-A Norfolk Tides in 2016.
“Ariel Miranda is a power left-handed pitcher with a four-pitch mix that is major league ready that provides us with flexibility,” Mariners’ GM Jerry Dipoto told the AP. “We are very excited for what he can bring to the Mariners.”
The Orioles lead the Toronto Blue Jays by 0.5 game in the AL East, despite their starting rotation currently ranking 28th in Major League Baseball with a 5.02 ERA and 559 innings pitched.
