2019 Masters Second Round Highlights

The second round on Friday didn’t come without its delays as inclement weather brought an brief halt to play at The Masters. Many of golf’s top competitors had to quickly compose themselves and stay focused to grind late into the day. With the cutline ousting 22 competitors, there now sits five tied for the lead at 7-under par entering the weekend.

Three-time major champion Brooks Koepka once again holds a share of the lead just as he did following the opening round. Both shooting 67 on Friday, Francesco Molinari and Jason Day also find themselves as part of the lead pack. Rounding out this fivesome are 2013 Masters champion Adam Scott and 2010 Open champion Louis Oosthuizen.

Currently 10 players all sit within just three shots of the lead including the always captivating Tiger Woods. Meanwhile, former major champions including Sergio Garcia and Justin Rose are heading home early after missing the cut. Last Word on Golf has your top highlights and moments from Friday’s second round at The Masters from Augusta National.

Roars around Augusta

There’s nothing quite like the roar of the gallery for Tiger Woods, especially at The Masters. On the heels of a bogey at the 5th the four-time green jacket recipient took the break on the following green to get to 3-under with a birdie.

Having yet to yield anything under par for the day, Woods was the first player in the field to birdie the par-4 11th hole Friday. He confidently eased his third shot back up the green before seeing it disappear into the bottom of the cup and igniting the crowd once again.

After going wayward off the tee, Woods needed to stick his approach with the gallery surrounding him at 14. The 18-time major champion did just that (then got tripped by security) before flushing a 28-foot birdie putt home to move to just two strokes off the lead.

Through the pouring rain and with the world watching the Tiger train continued to roll on down the tracks once again at 15 with yet another birdie to move just one shot off the leaders. Woods would finish with a 4-under round of 68 and sits just one shot off the lead heading into Saturday.

Who needs a Putter?

While his day didn’t end particularly well, Keith Mitchell created his own Masters moment at the par-4 7th as he one-hopped his approach into the hole for eagle.

Just one shot off the lead heading into Saturday, Dustin Johnson salvaged an improbable birdie chip-in after his previous approach took a dive into the infamous Rae’s Creek.

Justin Thomas has had an up and down first two days already at The Masters. He’s kept himself in contention thanks to precision around the greens including a birdie chip-in at the par-3 6th.

If one chip-in wasn’t enough than a second, this time for eagle, is exactly what Justin Thomas needed late in his round at the par-5 15th.

Maybe the putter isn’t a bad thing

Sitting one off the lead heading to 15, 2013 Masters winner Adam Scott stuck his second shot right up next to the pin on the treacherous par-5. Scott sank his routine four-foot putt for his third shot, an eagle and a one stroke lead with three to play.

The odds on favorite heading into the week Rory McIlroy hasn’t had many shots to smile about thus far. Sitting at 1-over par McIlroy found the perfect line to drain a 50-foot birdie to reach even par.

The Augusta native Charles Howell III took advantage of the greens where he could as he propelled himself into the top-10 with a lengthy eagle putt at the 510-yard par-3 13th.

After a difficult start to his 100th Masters round, three-time winner Phil Mickelson brought his round back to even par to make the turn Friday.
