Arm: C+
Does not throw the ball with great distance, but does throw with very good velocity. Has an elongated throwing motion, which is a concern when projecting him to the next level. The combination of his height and slow release could lead to a number of tipped passes in the NFL
Accuracy: D+
Overall accuracy is pedestrian, even below average at times. Too often put the ball outside the catch radius of his receiver. Flashes good downfield throwing, but missed his man too many times. Teammates were visibly frustrated at his inability to put the ball where it needed to be. Needs a lot of time and room to be confident enough to set his feet and put his body into throws. Too often would not set his feet in order to get the throw out quicker and accuracy suffered significantly as a result.
Athleticism: B
Has a very sturdy build, and looks capable of carrying the football without any significant risk of injury on any given play. Is able to bull through weak arm tackles and must be wrapped up. Is not a speedster or an ankle breaker, but is capable of picking up solid yardage when nothing is available.
Intangibles: C+
Can be flustered by pressure, by shows the athleticism to keep the play alive, and ordinarily keeps a cool head in the pocket. Uncertainty about how well respected he is as a leader, given the body language of his receivers after some incompletions. Field vision is questionable given his height and the amount of time he takes to make his throw. Will make questionable decisions. Did not work from under center where it is more difficult to read the defense. Had excellent weapons during his entire career, whether it was Sammy Watkins, Nuke Hopkins, or Andre Ellington, and was certainly helped by the talent of those around him. Looked lost against Florida State, even at home. Did not have a particularly good Senior Bowl week.
Red Flags: Size
Bottom Line: While Boyd has been highly productive during his three full years as starter, the numbers are misleading. The main issue with Boyd is that no aspect of his game really stands out, even at the college level. Boyd was never a Johnny Football or a Denard Robinson running with the football, and the element of using his legs will likely be mitigated in the NFL, as he will be easily chased down, and only ever picked up three yards and a cloud of dust anyway. While he has garnered comparisons to Russell Wilson, I don’t see the natural QB play that was characteristic of Wilson while at NC State and Wisconsin. Boyd projects as a 3rd QB, but is not limited to any particular offense.
Comparison: Nate Davis
Grade: 7.4 (5th Round)
