The Anaheim Ducks announced on Wednesday that an MRI on defenceman Cam Fowler revealed that the youngster has a sprained MCL in his left knee and will miss the next three to five weeks. The time line would take Fowler out for the rest of the NHL regular season, and possibly the early part of the playoffs.
The 21-year-old defender suffered the injury during the second period of Anaheim’s 6-4 win in Colorado on May 14th. He had two assists in the game before suffering the injury. Fowler has missed the Ducks last two games as a result.
Fowler, in his fourth season with the Ducks, leads all team defenceman and is fourth on the club overall with 36 points (6 goals, 30 assists) and has a plus-15 rating in 67 games so far this season. He leads the Ducks with an average of 23:54 on the ice every game.
Fowler also played for the U.S. Olympic squad in this year’s Sochi Winter Olympics.
Stephane Robidas, acquired by the Ducks at the trade deadline, played his first game for the team yesterday. He suffered a broken leg while playing for the Dallas Stars in November. He should help pick up some of the slack while Fowler is out, but obviously does not replace everything that Fowler was doing for the team. It will be up to all of the Ducks defencemen to step up in Fowler’s absence.
Cam Fowler was drafted by the Ducks in the first round, 12th overall, of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
