Tiger Woods Out of US Open

Tiger Woods will miss the 6th major of his career, and second this year, as he has officially pulled out of the 114th edition of the U.S. Open which will be held June 12-15 at Pinehurst No. 2.   Woods finished as a runner-up at the same course in 2005, and in a tie for third there in 1999.

Tiger Woods made the announcement official on his website.

“Unfortunately, I won’t be there because I’m not yet physically able to play competitive golf,” Woods said. “I’d like to convey my regrets to the USGA leadership, the volunteers and the fans that I won’t be at Pinehurst. The U.S. Open is very important to me, and I know it’s going to be a great week.”

Woods continues his recovery from March back surgery which was done to help relieve pain from a pinched nerve in his back.  The surgery forced Woods to miss the Masters for the first time in his career.

Woods is a three-time U.S. Open Champion, just one behind the all-time record of four victories held by Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, Bobby Jones and Willie Anderson. His last U.S. Open victory was in 2008 at Torrey Pines.  That was also the 14th and most recent major victory of Woods career as he remains four short of Jack Nicklaus’ 18 major victories.

Woods did not give a timeline on his recovery, saying that it would be up to his doctors.

Woods said, “Despite missing the first two majors, and several other important tournaments, I remain very optimistic about this year and my future.”
