Jacob deGrom Out For Season

Just as the New York Mets were jumping into the thick of the playoff race, they get some troubling news on one of their marquee starters. Jacob deGrom has been scratched from his scheduled start on Saturday against the Minnesota Twins, and will be shut down for the remainder of the season, according to ESPN.

Jacob deGrom Out For Season

Before today’s game, Mets GM Sandy Alderson adressed the media and informed them that deGrom would be shut down for the season. He most likely will have surgery on the Ulnar Nerve in his pitching arm. The surgery would him out for three to six months. You can add deGrom to the list of Mets pitchers with injury issues this year. The list includes: Matt Harvey (thoracic outlet syndrome), Steven Matz (shoulder, elbow bone spur), Jacob deGrom (forearm), Noah Syndergaard (elbow bone spurs) and Zack Wheeler (slow recovery from Tommy John surgery). Surely, the Mets training staff will have questions to answer. For now? What does this mean to their playoff hopes?

The Mets will be running out a few rookies in Robert Gsellman and Seth LugoLugo has a 2.40 ERA, and Gsellman isn’t far behind with a 3.40 ERA so far. It will be tough to rely on rookie starters to come in the clutch during this postseason fight. Things were looking good as the Mets had been taking advantage of the St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants slip-ups in the last week. The Giants though have taken two of four so far against the Cardinals, and look poised to take at least a third in this series. That should put enough distance between the wild-card spots and the Cardinals. If the Mets can keep pace with Cardinals through the rest of the year, they could still make the Wild-Card game. However, if the Giants get hot the last two weeks, they may end up facing a trip to Los Angeles or San Francisco for the Wild Card Playoff.
