New York Yankees Acquire Andrew McCutchen
Career Profiles
Drafted with the eleventh pick by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2005 MLB Draft, McCutchen would burst onto the scene in 2009, playing in 109 games his rookie year. In his rookie year, McCutchen would hit a .286 batting average with twelve home runs and 54 RBI. That performance would be good enough for fourth in ROY voting. McCutchen would spend 9 years in Pittsburgh, totaling 1,346 games during his tenure as a Pirate. In that time, McCutchen would also be named the NL MVP in 2013, along with finishing third in 2011 and 2014, and a fifth-place finish in 2015. McCutchen would also be named an All-Star in five straight seasons from 2011 to 2015. In 2012, he would win a Gold Glove, and four Silver Slugger awards from 2012 to 2015.
On January 15th, 2018, McCutchen would be traded to the Giants in exchange for outfielder Bryan Reynolds and pitcher Kyle Crick. So far this season while with the Giants, McCutchen has hit a career-low .255 batting average with 55 RBI and fifteen home runs.
Avelino is ranked as the Yankees number 23 prospect by MLB Pipeline. This year, Avelino played for the Yankees’ Doube-A team before being promoted to Triple-A. In his time in Triple-A, Avelino has hit a .252 batting average with five home runs and 38 RBI.
De Paula is ranked as the Yankees number 26 prospect. This year, pitching for the Yankees’ A- team, De Paula has a 2-2 record with a 1.71 ERA.
Trade Analysis
For the Yankees, this move was much needed. With Judge presumably out for the foreseeable future, they needed another outfielder that they could slot in. For the Giants, they get some salary relief from McCutchen’s contract and the rest of his salary, as well as a couple of decent prospects. But the Yankees are clearly stacking up for the postseason, and McCutchen will be along for the ride.
