Cardinals, Cubs Set for 2023 London Series

The Cardinals and Cubs will play at London Stadium June 24-25, 2023. It’s part of the new MLB World Tour that MLB announced Thursday morning. The Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals were supposed to play in London in 2020, but it was cancelled to the COVID-19 pandemic. London hosted the first set of games in June 2019 when the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees crossed the pond.

The news comes a week before the Cubs play against the Cincinnati Reds in the second Field of Dreams Game in Dyersville, Iowa.

The bitter and story rivalry between the NL Central clubs continued this week in a three-game series at Busch Stadium. Both Chicago and St. Louis have experience playing in international games in the past. The Cardinals faced the Reds when they played in Monterrey, Mexico, in 2019. For the Cubs, they opened the 2000 season against the New York Mets in Tokyo. Three years later, they played the Montreal Expos in Suan Jan for a three-game series.

London Stadium was originally constructed for the 2012 Summer Olympics with Field Turf. The venue has dimensions of 330 feet down the lines and 385 to center field. It proved to be a hitter-friendly park as the Yankees swept the Red Sox, 17-13 and 12-8 three years ago.

The 2023 London Series is part of the MLB World Tour. There are plans for up to 16 exhibition games and 24 regular-season games that could see teams visit around the world in Asia, Mexico, Latin America, and Europe through 2026.

A rivalry like the Cubs-Cardinals dates back to 1892. The Cardinals have won 19 NL pennants, whereas the Cubs have won 17. St. Louis has the advantage regarding World Series championships, having won 11 to Chicago’s three. However, the Cubs lead the regular season series 1,257-1,200-18. Their lone playoff meeting occurred in the 2015 NLDS, with the Cubs winning the series in four games.
