Young Marlins Pitcher Returns, Jake Burger Placed on the Injured List

The Miami Marlins have finally caught a good break with starting pitcher Edward Cabrera coming off the injured list. Miami will place third baseman Jake Burger on the 10-day IL due to a left oblique injury, tweets Craig Mish of The Miami Herald. The club will recall Otto Lopez to take Burger’s spot. As for Cabrera will make his start on Monday against the San Francisco Giants instead of A.J. Puk. The left-hander is out due to an illness so he’ll be pushed back for a few days. Cabrera, 26, was out while recovering from a shoulder impingement he suffered during the offseason.

According to Christina De Nicola of MLB.com, Max Meyer will be optioned as the corresponding move for Cabrera’s return. Meyer’s workload and innings will be monitored as he’s coming back from Tommy John surgery. The Marlins could use a young, healthy starting pitcher with their ace Sandy Alcántara and Eury Pérez both out with the same injury as Meyer once had. Then there’s the top-of-the-rotation starter, Jesús Luzardo, who is not looking too good as he is 0-2 so far with a 7.25 ERA in three games.

Marlins Activate Edward Cabrera Off IL

The right-hander is coming off a season where he went 7-7 with a 4.24 ERA and 118 strikeouts in 99 2/3 innings. Cabrera has struggled heavily with his command and was even an option to the minors last season as a result of his issues. After returning from the minors he went 2-1 with a 2.38 Era and 1.37 WHIP in five starts. If he has better control of his pitches he can transform himself into a reliable starting pitcher for the Marlins.

In three Triple-A rehab starts,  allowing one run in 12 2/3 innings. He walked seven batters over seven innings in his first two appearances. Cabrera struggled with his command in the first two games- striking out nine batters with one walk in 5 2/3 innings. His latest outing shows he’s very capable of being able to pitch a normal workload in his first start back.

Cabrera signed with the Marlins as an international free agent in 2015. He made his big league debut with the club in 2021.
