Another day, another loss for the Chicago White Sox. Following their seventh consecutive loss, the Chicago White Sox are having their worst start in franchise history. The White Sox dropped Thursday’s series finale to the Minnesota Twins after taking a two-run lead in the sixth inning. This marked Chicago’s seventh consecutive loss, dropping the White Sox to 3-22 on the young season. Entering Thursday’s games, every other team in baseball had at least six wins, with all but five teams having at least 10.
Off to the worst start in franchise history, the White Sox have been outscored 141-56 and allowed 38 home runs. The White Sox are the fourth team in baseball history to lose 22 of their first 25 games. Chicago joins Cincinnati (2022) and Detroit (2003) as the only teams in MLB history to open a season 3-22. Only the Baltimore Orioles in 1988 had a worse record through the first 25 games of the season (2-23). This is the second time a team has opened the season 3-22 in three years. All three teams lost at least 100 games in their respective seasons.
Chicago White Sox Make History With Miserable Start
Two years removed from a divisional title and back-to-back postseason appearances, the White Sox went 61-101 in 2023. Chicago is rebuilding, which is evident when Dylan Cease was traded to the Padres for San Diego’s top prospects. The White Sox have also suffered from injuries to key players Yoán Moncada, Luis Robert Jr., and Eloy Jiménez. Chicago hired longtime Royals coach Pedro Grifol as their manager following the departure of Tony La Russa. Grifol boasts a 64-123 managerial record in his second season as a big-league manager.
“We are all in this thing together, and we are all trying to get out of this and start moving in the direction we feel like we are going to be,” Grifol said. “There are some things that have to get done, and we must continue to stay true to the process.”
For the White Sox to avoid a dreaded 100-loss season, Chicago must go 60-77 in their final 137 games. That’s a 71-win pace for a team with only three wins four weeks into the season. Matching the 40-120 record set by the 1962 New York Mets is in play for the White Sox if something doesn’t change.
