The Miami Marlins #5 prospect center fielder Dillon Head is scheduled for season-ending hip surgery on June 21. Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports that Head will require a left femoral acetabular impingement procedure. The centerfielder was the headline of the San Diego Padres package sent to the Marlins in exchange for all-star 2B Luis Arraez. Since being acquired on May 4th, he has played in five minor league games with the Marlins organization. Head is still young and filled with potential so this injury should be a short impediment in his career.

The Padres drafted center fielder Dillon Head, 19, 25th overall in the first round of the 2023 draft from Illinois’ Homewood-Flossmoor Community High School. During his time with the Padres, he played 50 games where he slashed .237/.317/.366 with a homer in 104 plate appearances. In the Padres organization, he was ranked 6th by MLB.com. He was acquired by the Fish on May 4th and played in five games with the Marlins organization. In this five-game stint, he had four hits and three strikeouts. Head is currently ranked fifth in the Marlins organization by MLB.com. In addition, FanGraphs has him ranked third in the Marlins organization behind pitchers Max Meyer and Noble Meyer. The lefty is mostly known for his speed; on the scouting scale from 20-80, he is graded at an impressive 80.

Isaac Azout of Fish on First reports that he should be back and able to play in three months. That would be in September, so the Marlins are most likely sidelining him until the end of the season. This would be in efforts to not rush his recovery and have him properly recover for the following season. Realistically, he could stay one more year in the minors and make his major league debut in 2026.
