We are almost three months into this year’s MLB regular season. At this point, we’ve seen some teams thrive, and others sink to the bottom of their respective division. A few teams can record the worst record not only in the American or National League but also in this regular season.
Rockies Chances of Gaining the First Overall Pick in the 2025 Draft
One of those teams is the Colorado Rockies. At 27-50, this Rockies team competes with the 26-50 Miami Marlins for the worst team in the National League. In the American League, there’s the 29-50 Oakland Athletics, and the Chicago White Sox at 21-57, who currently hold the worst record in the Majors thus far. Indeed, these four teams will be competing for the rest of the season to see who will receive that number one overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft.
Colorado currently has a 16-23 record at home and an 11-27 record on the road. The Rockies home record is second-best next to the Athletics between the three other franchises. Colorado’s 11-27 road record is the second-worst as Chicago’s 8-32 record on the road takes the edge. The Rockies have scored the most runs between these four teams, with 335. However, they’ve given up significantly more runs than the other three franchises. They’ve given up 62 additional runs than the White Sox. Colorado has a 15-18 record against sub .500 teams. Chicago has an 11-36 record against teams under .500. Against their divisional rivals, Colorado has gone 10-17. Chicago has the worst record when facing opposite-league teams at 6-16.
Three months into the season, it certainly seems like while the Rockies have been one of the worst teams in the Majors, they aren’t bad enough to receive that first overall pick. They certainly have dealt with their woes thus far, as they edged themselves on the wrong side of the MLB history books earlier this year. Yet, teams like the White Sox and the Marlins have a higher shot of receiving the 2025 first-overall pick. Both Chicago’s and Miami’s offenses and pitching staff are pretty much nonexistent, especially the White Sox. Anything could happen in the final few months of the regular season, but the White Sox are destined to take the first overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft. Colorado will certainly be close but may end up with the third or fourth selection. Still, that would put Colorado in prime position to take an impact player.
