Guardians Outfielder Placed on 10-Day IL

The Cleveland Guardians have placed outfielder Steven Kwan on the 10-day IL due to a back injury. In addition, the Guardians have recalled Myles Straw from Triple-A Columbus and have designated right-handed pitcher Carlos Carrasco for assignment. Kwan’s official diagnosis is mid-back inflammation.

Guardians Place Gold Glover Steven Kwan on 10-Day IL

This is a tough loss for Cleveland so late in the season, and Kwan has already missed his fifth straight game. He is a threat at the plate and is enjoying a strong season with a career-high in home runs, slugging, OPS, and wRC+. Kwan is also a hitter who doesn’t chase at the plate, which is one reason why he’s been so successful this season. He is hitting .291 with 13 home runs, 43 RBIs, and 12 stolen bases. Kwan is also strong defensively in the outfield, able to cover plenty of ground and employ a strong throwing arm. On September 12th against the Tampa Bay Rays, Kwan made an accurate and robust throw to save a run for the Guardians.

Kwan is the type of hitter that every team desires, as he draws a lot of walks in addition to his hitting ability. He has drawn nine walks in his last 10 games to go with six hits. Hopefully, Kwan won’t be out too long and can return for the postseason. Kwan also had a hamstring issue that kept him out for most of May. In the first half of the season, Kwan led MLB with a batting average of .352. However, in the second half, he has only batted .201. But despite some struggles, Kwan is the type of hitter the Guardians need in their lineup.

As MLB celebrated Roberto Clemente Day on September 15th, Kwan was nominated as the Guardians’ 2024 Roberto Clemente Award nominee.
