Report: Aaron Boone Expected to Return as Yankees Manager in 2025

The New York Yankees will likely bring Aaron Boone back as manager in 2025, per SNY’s Andy Martino. The team holds an option on Boone’s contract for next season, which they will reportedly pick up. The news comes on the heels of a devastating 7-6 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers to end the World Series, a game the Yankees appeared in full control of until the fifth inning.

Report: Aaron Boone Expected Back as Yankees Manager in 2025

Boone is coming off his seventh season managing the Yankees. Although he helmed the Yankees to their first American League pennant since 2009, his questionable decision-making led to a heartbreaking Game 1 loss in the Fall Classic that set the tone for the rest of the series. With a 3-2 lead in the 10th inning, the Yankees allowed two Dodgers to reach base in the bottom of the frame.

With both Tim Hill and Nestor Cortes warming in the bullpen, Boone opted to go with Cortes to try to get the last two outs of the game. This was despite the fact that Hill was the team’s best left-handed reliever in the postseason and that Cortes was a starter coming off an injury, not having pitched since September. Although they eventually got within one out of a win, Cortes served up a hanger to Freddie Freeman, who hit a walk-off grand slam.

Another problem all season that one could (at least partially) attribute to Boone was a team-wide case of shaky defense and fundamentals. In Wednesday’s Game 5, it came back to bite them in the worst way. Two crucial errors (and another mental error, scored a hit) led to the Dodgers scoring five runs in the fifth inning to tie the game. Even after falling in a big hole early, they came back late to beat the Yankees and clinch the title. While Boone deserves some credit for bringing the Yankees so far, to not even give his return a second thought seems baffling, but not unexpected.
