The Dark Horse of Free Agency is Generating Plenty of Buzz

Ha-Seong Kim‘s 2024 season was marked by both promise and setback. Before a labrum tear in his right shoulder cut his campaign short in mid-August, Kim had posted respectable numbers, including 11 home runs, 47 RBI 22 stolen bases and a .700 OPS in 121 games. The injury, which required surgery in early October, has introduced uncertainty in Kim’s free agency prospects. Nevertheless, the 29-year-old shortstop, who won a Gold Glove and received MVP votes in 2023, remains an intriguing option for teams seeking a defensive stalwart with league-average bat potential.

Ha-Seong Kim’s Rising Stock

Kim has established himself as a top infield target in this winter’s free-agent class. Since becoming a staple in the San Diego Padres lineup in 2022, Kim has consistently delivered on solid offense, posting a .250/.336/.385 slash line that’s good for a 106 wRC+. Notably, he made significant strides in plate discipline this season, boasting a 12.3% walk rate and an impressive 16.4% strikeout rate. Kim’s speed is another asset, evidenced by his 60 stolen bases in 74 attempts over the past two seasons.

However, a significant concern has emerged that could impact Kim’s free agency prospects. The major procedure on his throwing shoulder, a labrum repair, may raise worries among potential suitors about the longevity of his defensive value. This development has added complexity to Kim’s free agency, which had previously seemed poised to yield a substantial multi-year contract. The situation has become even more intriguing with Kim’s recent switch to representation by the Boras Corporation in October.

Potential Landing Spots

Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pirates may seek to bolster their shortstop position after moving Oneil Cruz to center field last season. Kim, with his experience at three infield positions other than first base, could be a welcoming option. His low strikeout rate would make a great addition to a Pirates lineup that ranked fourth in strikeouts last season. While Kim’s bat is a valuable asset, his greatest impact on the Pirates would likely come from his defense and aggressive baserunning

San Francisco Giants

The Giants struggled to find stability at shortstop following Brandon Crawford‘s departure last year. Highly touted shortstop Marco Luciano lost the starting job to Nick Ahmed amid concerns about his defense during spring training. Tyler Fitzgerald ended the 2024 season as the Giants’ everyday shortstop. However, he can play multiple positions and could profile better as a second baseman. A move to the Bay Area could make sense for Kim. He already has ties to both Giants manager Bob Melvin and one of their everyday outfielders. Kim and Jung Hoo Lee were teammates in Korea with two different teams from 2017-2020 while playing together in the World Baseball Classic.

Melvin has a familiarity with Kim, having managed him in San Diego in 2022 and 2023. The Giants are prioritizing pitching and defense, and president of baseball operations Buster Posey indicated they will target a shortstop.

Toronto Blue Jays

If the Blue Jays don’t address their corner outfield needs, their next priority will likely be upgrading second base. Kim could be an ideal fit, as he would likely slot in at second base. With Bo Bichette at shortstop, the Blue Jays have internal options for second and third base, including Davis Schneider, Will Wagner, Addison Barger, Orelvis Martinez, and Ernie Clement. However, these players lack significant major league experience. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. also sees occasional time at third base.

Kim’s skills, particularly his ability to draw walks and steal bases, make him an attractive candidate to lead off, filling the void when necessary.

Market Value and Projection

Spotrac projects Kim is expected to command a four-year deal with $49 million, with an average annual salary of $12.3 million. For comparison, Lourdes Gurriel Jr.‘s recent four-year, $53 million contract serves as a relevant benchmark, given the similarities in age, contract status and statistical production between the two players.
