San Diego Padres and Milwaukee Brewers Make Blockbuster Trade

The San Diego Padres and Milwaukee Brewers have made the first big trade of the offseason. The Padres have acquired outfielder Trent Grisham and RHP Zach Davies from the Brewers. The Brewers have acquired shortstop Luis Urias and LHP Eric Lauer. This could be the spark that ignites the MLB hot stove.

The Brewers now have a dynamic duo up the middle with the addition of Urias at shortstop and Keston Hiura at second base. This is a tandem the Brewers hope will stay together for many years to come.

The Brewers opening day lineup in 2020 could look a lot differently than 2019’s version. Catcher Yasmani Grandal has already signed with the Chicago White Sox. Mike Moustakas is a free agent who is looking for a multi-year contract. There are a number of teams linked to Moustakas including the Brewers.

The Brewers lost in the wild card game to the Washington Nationals when Grisham allowed a single with the bases loaded off the bat of Juan Soto to go under his glove allowing the go-ahead run to score.

Meet The New Brewers

Urias, 22 in his six minor league seasons hit .308 with 36 HR and 219 RBI. However, he has not been able to hit well in his limited time in the major leagues. Urias is batting .221 with six HR and 29 RBI in 263 at-bats across two seasons. Urias has a lot of upside and should be given every opportunity to play in Milwaukee.

Lauer, 25 is a left-handed starting pitcher. Over two seasons he has a record of 14-17 with a 4.40 ERA and a 1.460 WHIP in 52 starts. He projects as a back end starting pitcher at best.

New Friar in San Diego

This is a bold move for the Padres and there could be more to come. Last offseason the Padres gave 300 million dollars to Manny Machado. This offseason they are linked to more big names. It appears the Padres ownership is tired of losing and more major moves could be on the way.

By acquiring Grisham the Padres have added yet another outfielder to a seemingly crowded position. During last season the Padres shipped out Franmil Reyes for top outfield prospect Taylor Trammell. Now they have added Grisham to the mix. This does seem like another trade is coming.

Meet the New Padres

Grisham, 22 is a former first-round pick who had a great season in the minors in 2019. Grisham hit 26 HR and drove in 71 runs while hitting .300 in just 370 at-bats. He struggled in his first taste in the majors batting .231 with six HR and 24 RBI in 156 at-bats. The Padres traded one of their better young players to get Grisham so he should be given every chance to play.

Davies, 26 is coming off his best season as a starting pitcher. Davies went 10-7 with a 3.55 ERA and a 1.290 WHIP. For his career, Davies is 43-32 with a 3.91 ERA and 1.299 WHIP. Davies slots in as a middle of the rotation pitcher.
