Seattle Mariners‘ third baseman Kyle Seager was nominated for the Roberto Clemente Award. This prestigious individual award in Major League Baseball is a high honor. This award looks to build on the legacy left behind by Pittsburgh Pirates‘ outfielder Roberto Clemente in his short life. Seager, among one other nominee from each team, will be voted on by fans and a blue-ribbon panel to determine the league winner in 2021.
Domestic Violence Campaign Involvement
Seager is very active within the Seattle community. This possibly being his last season in Seattle, the nomination could not come at a better time for the veteran. For the seventh year, Seager teamed up with the Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence. He served as a spokesperson for the Refuse To Abuse Campaign. In 2021, it was the 25th year Refuse To Abuse and the Mariners have done a campaign. Among Seager, manager Scott Servais and pitcher Justus Sheffield were in attendance for the cause.
The Refuse To Abuse is a campaign that not only tries to prevent domestic violence, but attempts to encourage positive and healthy relationships. It also campaigns for survivors of domestic abuse as well as provides education and support. The 2021 Refuse To Abuse 5k was held at both T-Mobile Park and virtually. This raised $113,000. This, however, is just a small glimpse of what Seager does in Seattle.
Seager’s Involvement With Youth Campaigns
Seager spends time in youth initiatives, a big portion of his charity work. He is a frequent visitor To Seattle Children’s Hospital, as well as the Seattle Children’s Heart Centre. He campaigns for cancer research as a part of his devotion to children’s hospitals. He has also granted many wishes from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Unfortunately in 2020, a lot of the Make-A-Wish trips to the ballpark were unable to happen. Seager went above and beyond and participated in a luncheon to support children who had their wishes delayed due to the pandemic. This initiative, with Seager’s involvement (among many others), raised more than $169,000.
Five years ago, Seager also had a very successful cancer research campaign fundraiser which raised more than $23,000 which raised many for the hospitals in the Seattle area that he visits. Seager is also a part of charities such as the American Heart Association, Boys and Girls Clubs, Big Brothers-Big Sisters, as well as being active in Mariners Care. Mariners Care is a non-profit organization. Just a few nights ago, a charity night including items of Seager’s that were auctioned off. Seager not only deserves his nomination for the Clemente award, but his passion for the community is inspiring to many.
