The Chicago White Sox have a player that could end up being a big surprise this season. Is it enough to get called up and earn some playing time? It’s no secret that the White Sox are in dire need of help. Injuries have struck them and struck them hard. They have lost Eloy Jiménez, Luis Robert Jr., and Yoán Moncada to injuries. Jimenez should be back soon but Robert Jr. and Moncada will be out for an extended length of time. That spells out a “nightmare” for the White Sox who are trying to play well and win.
The Sox have made a lot of roster moves this offseason to try to get their lineup straight and replace those players that they lost. Just recently, they called up prospect Lenyn Sosa. Sosa has spent a lot of time going back and forth between the majors and the minors in his career. Now, he has an opportunity to stick with the White Sox, in the majors, and finally make a name for himself.
Ideally, it would be great if Sosa could shine at third base so that he can replace Moncada while he is hurt and possibly, permanently. He could also sub at second base where the weak-batting Nicky Lopez currently resides. Lopez is a fine fielder but he’s not a strong player at the plate. Sosa might be better than Lopez in the long run when it comes to hitting the ball.
Lenyn Sosa Has Every Opportunity in Front of Him
The White Sox acquired the Venezuelan righty and he made his first showing in the majors back in 2022. According to Baseball Reference, he hit for a .114 average in 36 plate appearances. Sosa saw 173 plate appearances in 52 games with the White Sox last season giving himself a batting average of .201. He collected six home runs in his efforts giving Chicago a little hope for his future. His time in the minors has been successful and he’s been productive there.
In his seven minor league seasons, he’s batting .280/.322/.432 with 65 home runs in his minor league career. Through their first game with the Cincinnati Reds, Sosa has been to the plate 18 times and has four hits and two runs. He has one RBI and a total of six strikeouts.
The Future with Sosa
We hope that the future is bright for Sosa but the White Sox, as a whole, are not shining so brightly. The White Sox need the help, that’s for sure, and the Sosa is someone who has a lot to prove. It’s time that he made his way and stayed in the majors. Now to stay in the majors, he’s going to have to hit the ball effectively and that’s something that he failed to do in the White Sox last game versus the Reds. Sure, it’s just one game but consistency is key, and hitting regularly is a must.
With all of the injuries, it would be great if Sosa was able to get some experience in the majors and build on his career there. Sosa has a lot of potential and could stick in the majors, he just needs an opportunity. The club has mentioned that Moncada may not come back until after the All-Star break so Sosa has plenty of time to make an impression.
The question is, will the White Sox let him? They should, this team is going nowhere and it might be a good idea to try some of these younger guys out to see what they can do. It doesn’t appear that much of anything else is working so let Sosa play in the majors for a while and let him prove his value.
