Scorching Start From Grizzlies Stretch Big Earns Him New Contract

The Grizzlies converted Jay Huff's contract into a four year deal.

After a superb start to the 2024-25 season, the Memphis Grizzlies decided to convert stretch center Jay Huff‘s initial two-way contract into a standard four-year deal.

Scorching Start From Jay Huff Earns Him New Contract

The news follows a productive start to the season for the four-year man out of Virginia. Huff is averaging a career-high 12.3 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks in just 18.8 minutes of play this season. Huff is also shooting a blazing 63% from the field, and 58.8% from the three-point line while yet to miss a free throw. Huff’s shooting gravity has given the Grizzlies a potent dynamic to utilize off the bench. Before the season, Huff sat down with Grind City Media’s Jessica Benson and elaborated on his optimism and desire to make it work in Memphis after a few brief pit stops.

“I’d like to stick somewhere for more than a season. That would be nice. I’d love to stay in Memphis. The city’s been great. It’s very, it’s very chill and like it’s a very fun place for me personally. I’ve been a lot of places and I think you know it’s close enough home to be you know, not too difficult for like family to make it, it’s a little bit far but, like to stick somewhere for a little bit, and obviously get converted at some point one day from a two-way contract but, it’s also just fun being on teams that win and I think contributing to winning is you know going to be the most important thing.”

Without Ja Morant last night, the Memphis Grizzlies took on the Chicago Bulls in a road matchup falling 126-123. Huff chipped in 10 points on 3/5 shooting from the field including two makes from downtown in 18 minutes. Through four games, the Memphis Grizzlies are posting a 119.5 offensive rating when center Jay Huff is on the floor. That’s the highest rating amongst all Grizzlies who registered a minute this season. Bruiser big men Jaren Jackson Jr., Brandon Clarke, and Zach Edey should be able to provide viable paint protection to limit Huff’s deficiencies on the defensive end. The Grizzlies will host the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday night.

The Durham, North Carolina native continues to carve out a legit role in Taylor Jenkins’ rotations. The Grizzlies’ offense should only continue to prosper. Memphis now features an additional outside threat to enhance the dribble penetration strengths of guards Ja Morant and Desmond Bane. Grizzlies GM Zach Kleiman has done a spectacular job emphatically building this roster from the ground up.
