Sun Belt Power Rankings: Week 5

Week five of the season ended without any major shake-ups in the Sun Belt Power Rankings especially at the top. The Troy Trojans continue to look like a contender for the Sun Belt Conference.

Appalachian State won their conference opener to insert themselves into the top of the standings. Georgia Southern took an off-week to regroup before playing Arkansas State.

The two schools in Louisiana lost, New Mexico State may not be a contender for the conference in 2016 but they are definetely not a team to take lightly as evident of their win over Louisiana Lafayette.

And South Alabama beat another team most thought would blow them out.

Here is where everyone falls going into week six:

11. Arkansas State (0-4, 0-0)

The good news for the Red Wolves is that they did lose this past Saturday, but that’s because they were off. The bad news is that they have to play Georgia Southern Wednesday night.

Next game: Wednesday, October 5th vs. Georgia Southern. 8:00 pm ET

10.Georgia State (0-4, 0-1)

The Panthers fell 17-3 to Appalachian State to lose their fourth game of the season and their fifth game in a row. But the Panthers can still have a great year and compete for the conference title, they can begin that run this week against Texas State.

Next game: Saturday, October 8th vs. Texas State. 3:30 pm ET

9. Idaho (2-3, 0-1)

The Vandals lost the top team in the power rankings, Troy, 34-13. But since they have two wins on the season, the will remain at the number 9 spot while Georgia State falls behind them being 0-4. They travel to Louisiana Monroe this weekend in hopes of winning a conference game.

Next game: Saturday, October 8th at Louisiana Monroe. 7:00 pm ET

8. Louisiana Lafayette (2-3, 1-1)

The Ragin’ Cajuns did not help their conference championship hopes Saturday. They lost 37-31 to New Mexico State in double-overtime. The Cajuns are off this Saturday which is much needed.

Next game: Bye

7. New Mexico State (2-3, 1-1)

The Aggies picked up another big win on Saturday over Louisiana Lafayette in double overtime. There will be no chance of a letdown this Saturday because they do not have a game.

Next game: Bye

6. Louisiana Monroe (1-3, 0-1)

The Warhawks were smacked around by Auburn 58-7. Seeing as their loss was against a good power-five team, they do not fall too much. They can bounce back and pick up a win in the Sun Belt this Saturday against Idaho.

Next game: Saturday, October 8th vs. Idaho. 7:00 pm ET

5. Texas State (2-2, 0-0)

The Bobcats jump up from the no. 8 spot after their 48-17 win over Incarnate Word and because the three teams ahead of them lost. They travel to Atlanta this weekend in what should be a close and entertaining game with Georgia State.

Next game: Saturday, October 8th at Georgia State. 3:30 pm ET

4. South Alabama (3-2, 0-2)

The Jaguars hosted and defeated a San Diego State team that was no. 15 in the AP Poll 42-24. They may be win-less in conference play, but they have wins over a power-five team (Mississippi State, SEC) and a top-25 team.

Next game: Bye

3. Georgia Southern (3-1, 2-0)

The Eagles took an off week after their loss to Western Michigan. They have good chance to bounce back and win their third game in the conference Wednesday night against Arkansas State.

Next game: Wednesday, October 5th at Arkansas State. 8:00 pm ET

2. Appalachian State (3-2, 1-0)

The Mountaineers won their conference opener against Georgia State adding themselves to the three-way tie for first in the conference standings with Georgia Southern and Troy.

Next game: Bye

1. Troy (4-1, 2-0)

The Trojans put Idaho down 34-13 to improve their record and to remain in first place in the Sun Belt. They continue to look like a legitimate contender in the Sun belt Conference in 2016.

Next game: Bye
