Biggest Questions For UTSA In 2020

UTSA Edges out MTSU

With the Spring off-season being shortened due to COVID-19, this raises many question marks for UTSA’s 2020 season. The biggest questions for UTSA in 2020 is the introduction of new head coach Jeff Traylor, how Sincere McCormick will be utilized, and the ever-uncertain quarterback issue at UTSA.

Biggest Questions For UTSA In 2020

Jeff Traylor was named UTSA’s head coach back in December of 2019. This makes him the third head coach in the program’s history behind Larry Coker and Frank Wilson. Traylor has coached collegiately at the University of Texas at Austin as well as at Southern Methodist University and Arkansas before signing his contract with UTSA. One of the biggest questions is if Traylor will be able to make the seamless transition from running backs coach to head coach.

The community is optimistic that he has what it takes to lead the team to glory. However, the recent COVID-19 outbreak may have halted all of Traylor Spring plans. This leaves Traylor searching for answers as his team is unable to practice for an unknown period of time. He has also resorted to recruiting players digitally as opposed to in-person to avoid overexposure. Only time will tell if this first-time head coach will be able to lead the Roadrunners to their first conference-USA championship.

Sincere McCormick

Sincere McCormick had a breakout start to his collegiate career. The young freshman rushed for 983 yards on 177 yards and had eight rushing touchdowns in his first year. He has 1,177 total scrimmage yards as well as nine total touchdowns. McCormick was an absolute workhorse under Frank Wilson last year. However, Wilson underutilized him. McCormick produced on very few rushing attempts as Wilson tried to establish both a prominent rushing and passing attack.

McCormick hopes to replicate and even surpass all of his statistics from the previous year. All things point in the right direction for the product from Judson high school. Traylor was the running backs coach at Arkansas, so McCormick’s production should only go up from this point. UTSA needs an efficient running back because of their issues at the quarterback position.

Quarterback Questions

UTSA has had back-to-back years with quarterback issues. Frank Harris was supposed to be the team’s starter in the 2018 season but was held back with an ACL tear. Cordale Grundy would start in his place, however, it would lead them to a rather unproductive season. Frank Harris started in the 2019 season; however, he was shut down due to injury. Harris only played four games before being given an injury designation for the remainder of the season. Harris completed 66 of his 91 attempts for 486 yards in his four starts in 2019. He also threw for three touchdowns as well as two interceptions. Lowell Narcisse would be his replacement for most of the season.

There are going to be many questions regarding who will start at the quarterback position for the Roadrunners. The clear favorite is Frank Harris; however, his recent injury battles definitely raise some eyebrows. Jordan Weeks has been in the UTSA system for a while; however, his lack of experience does not bode well for him. There are many questions to be answered moving forward, however, the quarterback question is the most important. Traylor and company will have a tall task ahead of them. However, with community support an active player engagement, the Roadrunners could be on pace for a season of redemption.
