The LSU Tigers 2022 transfer list has key players at a plethora of positions to watch. Entering year one of the Brian Kelly era, the Tigers sought after high-caliber talent in the portal during the off-season. With Fall camp in full swing, the position battles are starting to heat up. As the program takes on new leadership, LSU football could have new faces seeing playing time in 2022.
LSU Tigers 2022 Transfer Impact Players
Offense Additions
Up first on the list, the Tiger’s offense has new additions that will play a key role this season. Specifically, at wide receiver, the Tigers brought in former Louisiana wideout Kyren Lacy. The former Ragin’ Cajuns standout caught 22 passes for 304 yards and six touchdowns in 2021. Those are pretty solid numbers in former UL head coach Billy Napier‘s system. With Napier in Gainesville now, Lacy has found a new home in Baton Rouge. Lining up opposite Tigers star-wideout Kayshon Boutte will provide a dynamic one-two punch on the outside for LSU. Lacy is a lengthy receiver at 6’3″, 212 pounds. He has a great catching ability and is stellar at getting separation in routes.
The Tigers have a full arsenal of wideouts this season that will see playing time. However, expect Lacy to see the field a lot in 2022. He should be the starter at the Y position on the outside. That extra depth gives LSU a lot to work with in terms of rotation at the position.
Continuing with the offense, former Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels has the hype train rolling in Baton Rouge. In 2021, the former Sun Devils starter threw for 2,380 yards with 10 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. From a pure talent perspective, the Junior signal-caller could fit well in the Tigers’ new offense. But, he has his work cut out for him. He will compete with Myles Brennan, Garrett Nussmeier, and freshman Walker Howard for the starting role in the Fall. Based on the Spring game back in April, Daniels has a lot of work to do to earn the starting role. Although, he possesses the attributes and abilities to lead LSU this season.
Backfield Depth
At running back, the Tigers got a hometown guy in former Penn State running back Noah Cain. Given LSU’s rushing issues the past two years, getting Cain could be a blessing in disguise. The Tigers need an elusive running back and Cain is that and much more. At Penn State in 2021, Cain rushed for 350 yards and four touchdowns on 106 carries. The 5’10”, 220-pound tailback has an aggressive running style and formidable size. Look for the Junior to get a chunk of the carries this season despite John Emery Jr. being back this year.
Defensive Standout Additions
At defense, the Tigers loaded up in the portal. The biggest commitment in the portal on that side of the ball for LSU was from former Ohio State cornerback Sevyn Banks. In 2021, Banks recorded just eight total tackles, but dealt with a knee injury and later a hip injury. Despite the pushback concerns, Banks put up solid numbers in 2020 with 23 total tackles, seven passes defended, and one interception. The Tigers need immediate help at the position following the departure of Eli Ricks.
Another Louisiana transfer, Mekhi Williams-Garner has been a solid addition at safety. The former Ragin’ Cajun was a third-team All-Sun Belt selection in 2021. In three seasons, he recorded 63 tackles with three and a half tackles for loss and 18 passes defended. In two of those seasons, Garner was a starter for Louisiana. He showcased his skills in the Spring game with his size and ability to press at the line of scrimmage.
