The European Premier league is the highest level of professional football in Great Britain. In contrast to many other professional leagues, the EPL acts as a corporation, with the member clubs actually being shareholders within the league.
The EPL comprises 20 clubs, with many of those teams being promoted and relegated within the English Football League (EFL) based on their results. The season runs from the late summer (in August) to early summer (May) of the following year, with club playing home-and-home matches for a total of 38 matches per team. These matches are usually played on Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
The league was originally known as the FA premier league, back when it was formed in mid-February of 1992. Prior to that, the clubs were originally part of Football League First, bought sought to form their own league so as to capitalize on the highly-lucrative television broadcast revenue opportunities. True to the move, the league eventually signed a deal with the British Telecommunications Network Sky, for over £1 billion.
Fast forward to today, and the league generates in excess of €2.2 billion each year, based off their television revenue in domestic and international markets. Fast forward to today, were it has become the most-watched sporting league in the entire world. EPL matches are broadcast in over 640 million homes across 212 territories, reaching an audience estimated at 4.7 billion people; in other words, the EPL reaches more than 50% of the population on planet Earth.
EPL Competition and Final Events
After each team plays each other in a double round-robin system, the winning team within the EPL receives three points after every match, or one point for every draw. Teams are then ranked sequentially, based on the total number of match-based points they have accumulated. Based off these accumulated points, the bottom three teams are relegated back to the EFL, while the top three teams qualify to play in the UEFA Champions league. The team placed fourth enters the Champions League at the play-off round for non-champions and must win a two-legged knockout tie in order to enter the group stage.
For over a decade, the Premier League has sat up high as the highest ranking European League, based on the performances of British teams in European tournaments over a five-year period. This broke the eight-year reign of the Spanish league, La Liga.
Biggest News To Date
At present, four of Great Britain’s top teams in the ELP are currently among the favorites to emerge as contenders for UEFA the Championship League. Manchester City and Liverpool have already advanced within the Champions league, after defeating Basel and Porto (respectively), and doing so in high-scoring fashion. In particular, Liverpool’s players believe they are among the best the British clubs have to offer, and are afraid of nobody. The well-heralded Manchester United Red Devils and Chelsea round out the top four English teams who have high aspirations within the Champions league. At one point, it looked like the EPL could have placed as many as five teams, but Tottenham suffered an early exit at the hands of Juventus, and no longer remains in the race.
