Ander Herrera has heaped praise onto Michael Carrick and believes he will become a “great coach” at Manchester United.
Carrick will play his last game in professional football against Watford at Old Trafford on Sunday. He announced his plans to retire and go into a coaching role earlier in the season, bringing an end to a 19-year career as a player.
Michael Carrick Will Be a “Great Coach”
The 36-year-old signed for United in 2006, and has enjoyed 12 glittering years littered with trophies at the Theatre of Dreams. He has won five Premier League titles, three EFL Cups, six Community Shields, the UEFA Champions League and Europa League, the FIFA Club World Cup and one FA Cup – which could become two if United beat Chelsea in next week’s final.
Carrick has been handed a coaching role by Jose Mourinho at United. His role could be a lot more significant now though after Rui Faria announced he would be leaving the club at the end of the season.
Herrera believes Carrick is the perfect person to become an assistant due to his cool and collected temperament.
“He’s the right person to be an assistant as he’s very calm and balanced,” said Herrera.
“If you have one guy next to you like that it really helps you. It’s one of the qualities he has that can make him a good manager in the future.
“He never gets crazy happy and in the bad moments he keeps his head and tries to give the right advice to the team. That’s why I think he’s going to be a good manager in the future.”
A Beautiful Send-Off
Carrick will bid an emotional farewell to Old Trafford for the last time as a player against Watford, and Herrera hopes he gets a “beautiful” send-off.
“It’s all about having a beautiful day and saying goodbye to Michael in the best way possible,” he continued.
“Let’s try and make it a beautiful day for him. He’s a legend of the club. I really respect him and look up to him because of the way he plays.
“He doesn’t speak that much but he always does it in a serious and right way. He trains hard every day, even when he’s not playing too much, and is so professional.
“I’ve been so lucky to play with him for years and hopefully I can enjoy him as an assistant. He has been very successful for the club, one of the best midfielders in the last 10 years in the world, and he is a big loss.”
