Everton midfielder Davy Klaassen has moved away from the Premier League after just one season, completing a move from Everton to Werder Bremen for an undisclosed fee.
Davy Klaassen Joins Werder Bremen
Klaassen joined the Toffees only last summer for a fee of £23.6 million and big things were expected of the former Ajax captain. He had captained the Dutch champions to the Europa League final in the 2016/17 season, where they lost to Manchester United.
The move to Germany comes a year to the day after Klaassen’s debut for Everton, which came in a Europa League tie against Slovakian side Ruzomberok. The Toffees won the tie 1-0.
Struggle to Break Through
Klaassen was given plenty of playing opportunities in the early stages of his Everton career. However, after some underwhelming performances, he was forced out of the squad and eventually made just 16 appearances throughout his solitary season on Merseyside.
Then-Everton manager Ronald Koeman described Klaassen as hardworking, creative and someone who would provide goals. None of that was visible in his time at Everton. The attacking midfielder finished without registering a goal or an assist for the club.
This didn’t change once Sam Allardyce was brought in to replace Koeman, and Klaassen was told that he had no future at the club by new manager Marco Silva.
Fresh Start
Speaking to the Werder Bremen website about his move to Germany from England, Klaassen said:
“It was important to me to know exactly where the journey was going on the pitch and the ambitions of the club have convinced me,” Klaassen told Bremen’s website.
“After my exchange with [coach] Florian Kohfeldt, I have a very good feeling that I can make an important contribution here with my abilities.
“The coach wants to play attractive, attacking football. I am really looking forward to that.”
