Stoke City have completed the signing of midfielder Sam Clucas for a fee believed to be around £6 million. Clucas has signed a four-year deal with the Potters as he aims to return to the Premier League.
Sam Clucas Moves to Stoke City
Clucas’ rise to the Premier League was a quick one after joining Hull City from Chesterfield. He spent one season in the Championship with the Tigers before being promoted to the top flight. Hull were relegated straight back to the second tier, and he spent a further season at that level before moving on to Swansea.
His solitary season with Swansea had its ups and downs. Many felt that his performances could have been better but also that when he did perform, he was one of their best players. He scored three goals for the Swans, all of which came against Arsenal. He scored once in a 2-1 defeat at the Emirates and twice in a 3-1 win at the Liberty Stadium.
Fitting in at Stoke
With so much quality at Stoke, it could be hard for Clucas to slot into the squad straight away. However, he has proven himself at both this level and in the Premier League and with some good performances, he could find himself a constant in the Stoke side.
His versatility also makes him a good signing, able to play at left-back or on the left of the midfield.
What They Had to Say
Upon concluding the deal for Clucas, Stoke City manager Gary Rowett said: “Sam boasts real Premier League quality, and the versatility that he offers will be hugely important to us, as he can play in any of the midfield areas, he is very comfortable out wide and he can play at left-back too.”
