Dutch goalkeeper Wieger Sietsma has become the second player to depart Sky Bet League Two side MK Dons in the last two days. The 23-year-old made just a handful of appearances with the club, all coming last season, and joins Aidan Nesbitt in departing.
Wieger Sietsma Becomes Second January Departure at MK Dons
Sietsma was signed by Robbie Neilson prior to the start of the 2017/18 season as a backup for Lee Nicholls. With only two goalkeepers in the squad, it seemed as though Sietsma’s main role for the first season was to provide competition for Nicholls so that he did not become complacent and suffer from a lack of form.
There was no worry for him, though, as the Dutchman’s league debut did not arrive until April 2018 after the first choice stopper had sustained a hand injury. Sietsma couldn’t help prevent the Dons’ dire lack of form and they lost the game 2-1 at home to Doncaster Rovers.
Down the Pecking Order
The arrival of Stuart Moore looked as though it was to provide competition for the second-choice spot. As it transpired, though, Moore was always going to be the Paul Tisdale’s number two, and Sietsma was confined to U23 matches while Moore made appearances in the Checkatrade Trophy.
Sietsma’s omission from the first-team squad has never been properly explained, but the departure will not be felt strongly by the fans. His performances were never convincing and upon relegation last season, there were fears that he would even struggle in League Two, let alone League One.
All in all, Sietsma made ten competitive appearances for the club, most likely making more for the U23’s team. His departure could signal a chance for one of the youth team goalkeepers to start making their way through, but the club seem content with keeping just two goalkeepers in the squad for now.
