What to Expect From Lincoln City in Their Return to League One

Lincoln City

The only way is up for Lincoln City following the title winning campaign last season. Promotion to League One capped off what has been an incredible three seasons under Danny and Nicky Cowley. As they embark on their first season in League One since the 1998/1999 season, they can be considered an outside for a play-offs spot come May. With positivity both on and off the pitch, there may never be a better time to support Lincoln City.

Signings So Far

The transfer window so far has seen four midfielders arrive at Sincil Bank, three of whom play in the centre of midfield. Jorge Grant is the only arrival who is not a central midfielder, instead operating on the wing. The 24-year-old has joined Lincoln for an undisclosed fee from Nottingham Forest, where he made just 17 appearances. However, he shone during loan spells with Notts County, Mansfield Town and Luton Town. It was Notts County where he was most successful, scoring 15 goals during the 2017/18 season.

Alongside Grant, they have also completed the signings of three players from Championship clubs. Danny Cowley has added Jack Payne from Huddersfield Town to his squad on a permanent deal. Payne spent last season on League One with Bradford City and nine goals in 39 appearances.

As well as Payne, Lincoln City have also added Joe Morrell and Alex Bradley to their ranks in the centre of midfield. Morrell arrives on a season-long loan from Bristol City, while Alex Bradley has joined on a free transfer from West Bromwich Albion. However, speaking to Lincolnshire Live, Danny Cowley has said that Bradley is likely to head out on loan.

The likelihood of further additions is up in the air. However, they could look to strengthening up front following the departure of Matt Rhead.

Potential Tactics

Danny Cowley will likely stick to the 4-2-3-1 that saw Lincoln City romp to the League Two title last season.

The major sticking point for DCowley will be who will lineup as the three in the centre of midfield. Pre-season suggests that new boys Morrell and Payne will feature alongside youngster Ellis Chapman in midfield. Chapman made his debut last season for Lincoln before heading on loan to non-league side Chesterfield.

A problem for the opening day of the season against Accrington Stanley is the central defensive pairing. Speaking to Mark Whiley of Lincolnshire Live, he is unsure as to whether Michael Bostwick will be able to play in the season opener. As a result, it leaves January signing Cian Bolger as the only fit centre-back.

Lincoln City: League One Expectations

Cowley will certainly be happy with a mid-table finish in the forthcoming League One season. A number of their league rivals have played in the Championship and higher during recent seasons, meaning they face stern tests.

However, if they start well and build confidence during their opening ten games of the season, it could lead to yet another successful season at Sincil Bank. Lincoln City can certainly be considered a shoo-in for the play-offs.
